Forced Assimilation

When one group of people are forced by another group to learn to act more like the second group. Some examples include learning a new language, living in similar homes, practicing a new religion, or following new traditions. The goal is to make people change their cultureThe traditions, customs, arts, and achievements of a particular nation or group of people. More (what they believe, traditions, etc) to be more like those of the people who want to be in power (make all the rules).

Talking with children about sensitive topics like racism, prejudice and privilege can feel uncomfortable or overwhelming. More Than A Book gives you tools for engaging your kids in meaningful conversations and actions around these kinds of subjects, sparked by reading stories together from our curated list of children’s books.

For each book of interest, we encourage you—prior to sitting down with your child—to first read the story yourself, or listen to the free Read Aloud, so you have a chance to process the book’s message. Then review our suggested Talk About It questions and Explore More activities to decide which discussions and projects will capture your child’s interest.

By talking and doing, your family will not only become more comfortable with these issues, but strengthen your commitment to being activists for change.
